HISOOSANCHEES, LITTLE SPANIARD

In 1834 accompanied by the dragoons, George Catlin entered Comanche territory in northern Texas. They were relieved when the Indians responded to the troops’ white flag with their white flag, a white buffalo skin presented by a spirited horseman. Half Spanish, this Comanche’s name was Hisoosánchees, Little Spaniard who became good friends with Catlin. Catlin described him as “An extraordinary little man who possessed extraordinary strength as well as agility, with frequent evidences of his gentlemanly politeness and friendship”.
