A consortium of leading American art dealers has organized a western art auction to be held in Scottsdale, Arizona in the spring of each year. Under the banner, Scottsdale Art Auction, dealers Mike Frost (Bartfield Galleries of New York City), Jack A. Morris, Jr. (Morris & Whiteside Galleries of Hilton Head Island, SC) and Brad Richardson (Legacy Galleries of Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming) joined together and presented their first sale on April 2, 2005 at Richardson’s Legacy Gallery on Main Street in Scottsdale, Arizona.

This year we will be bringing you over 350 works of important western, wildlife and sporting art. Scottsdale Art Auction, now in its 14th year, will host its 2018 auction on Saturday, April 7th.

Auction piece will be:  Four Bears, 1833    47.5" x 29"

Four Bears (Mato-Tope), a Mandan Chief, named for his skill as a warrior was said to have fought with the furiousness of four bears.

In the early 1830’s, explorer artists George Catlin and Karl Bodmer each painted Four Bears and wrote in their journals details of his life, giving us a vivid understanding of this great chief.

My Portrait of Four Bears portrays him at the height of his power wearing full regalia, face paint and many symbols that tell the stories of his exploits as a great warrior.
