The courting flute was a gift from the Elk People. They asked the woodpecker to carve it in his own image and gather the voices of the forest animals for it. As they presented it to a shy young man they told him, "Go alone, play your flute and wait for the woman you love. As the flute releases the song of the wind and the animals' voices, she will know what is in your heart."
